Five books from our 11-12-13 exchange

Using the sequence of numbers, 11-12-13 in any fashion in the formation of a book, the book artists exchanged books in early December. The original idea was to exchange on November 12, 2013 ... but we opted instead to do so at the last gathering.

Here is a shot I took of 5 of the books. I didn't get many good photos so hopefully another lovely book artist did. I hope each will comment on their book ... or be willing to post something about the book they created.

Books pictured here are from (left to right) Kriss Bottino, Annette Bouchey, Lois Anderson, Patti Kirch, and Laura Gable.

Gert's 11-12-13 Book

I finished the 11-12-13 book that now belongs to Donna Reynolds. The book is a counting book with 12 pages numbered consecutively. In addition to the Arabic numbering on the pages, there are triangles in numbers corresponding to the number on the page. The triangles are cut from cloth and have triangle shaped markings made with a wood-burning tool. The pages are a diamond shape with the long side measuring 13 cm and the shorter side 11 cm. I added a closure consisting of a bead at the apex of two middle points of the triangle and a wax linen tie to wrap around the beads. The two glass beads are mostly red with some black and the waxed linen is red with a red and a black bead on the end. The stand consists of a dark gray acrylic triangle with one side 11 cm, one side 12 cm and one side 13 cm. In the center of the stand is a clear acrylic rod positioned at a 13 degree angle. I bought the acrylic parts at RFB Plastics in Kennewick and Ron custom cut them for me. The book sits on a clear acrylic rod and is mostly held in place by gravity. It is prevented from sliding down the rod by an O ring from Ron's shop and a rubber gasket from ACE Hardware. At the top of the book is another O ring and a rubber gasket, but these serve no function other than make the display look finished.

Another Published Artist From Our Group.

We have another published artist in the Tri-City Book Arts Group. The artist is Marcia Keefer and her work is published in 500 Paper Objects, Gene McHugh, juror, published by Lark Crafts. Marcia has pieces on pages 166 and 303, but she says the labels are incorrect. The piece on page 313 is something of a book because it has words on it and is made from a previously published book.

Two of our fabulous book arts artists, Bobi Wilson and Susan Steinhaus Kimmel, were honored to have their amazing artist's books featured in Julie Chen's publication of "500 Handmade Books - Volume 2". Congratulations Susan and Bobi.

Artists Bobi Wilson, and Susan Steinhaus Kimmel are featured in this new book.

11-12-13 challenge (Laura Gable)

Our group had so much fun last year with the 12x12 challenge. We created pages for each book arts participant that measured 12" x 12" square, which we shared on Dec 12, 2012. This year we decided to do a 11-12-13 challenge. Though much less defined in their structure and sizes, it still is a challenging book to create. Each participant will represent that sequence of numbers in any fashion within the book... such as 11 pages, which might measure 12 inches, or 13 cm, or it was just simply created on November 12, 2013. I'm excited to share my little book at our next meeting. Here is a sneak peek of one of my 12" pages... More later!!

Afterward: This book veeered off down the road of incompletion due to technical difficulties. I will publish soon the actual book I completed for this challenge.
Here is a page from Laura's 11-12-13 challenge book.
It measures 12 inches long, and is done in mixed media
(paint, markers, stencil, water soluble graphite, and water soluble oil pastels).
Stay tuned next month for more information about the challenge.

12x12 Challenge (Laura Gable)

The book arts group had a great deal of fun on December 12, 2012 sharing our creations with each other. It was an exchange challenge, where we created 17 pieces for 17 participants, all sized 12x12 inches. Some artists did 17 versions of the same image, while others had variations on a theme, and others created samplers of their work. The results were very fun and amazing. I hope others will post what they created. I did variations on the same theme, using my pink poinsettia as inspiration. Though the technique was the same, each piece became a unique expression of this single theme. It was done on Velin arches paper, using acrylic inks, waterproof markers, white gel pens and colored pencils.
